Epilucina was named by Dall (1901) [Sepkoski's age data: J u R]. It is extant. Its type is Epilucina californica.

It was reranked as Codakia (Epilucina) by Glibert and van de Poel (1967); it was reranked as Lucina (Epilucina) by Cox et al. (1969).

It was assigned to Codakia by Glibert and van de Poel (1967); to Lucina by Cox et al. (1969); to Lucininae by Vokes (1980) and Coan et al. (2000); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
