Taxonomy
Chimaera townsendii was named by Buckland (1835). It is the type species of Ischyodus.

It was recombined as Chimaera (Ischyodon) townsendii by Agassiz (1843); it was recombined as Ischyodus townsendii by Woodward (1891) and Cvancara and Hoganson (1993); it was recombined as Ischyodus townsendi by Hoganson and Erickson (2005).
