Taxonomy
Plesiosaurus chilensis was named by Gay (1848) [named by Gervais in Gay 1848 named by Gervais in Gay 1848 named by Gervais in Gay 1848 named by Gervais in Gay 1848]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Cimoliosaurus chilensis by Lydekker (1889); it was recombined as Pliosaurus chilensis by Deecke (1895), Deecke (1896) and Colbert (1949); it was considered a nomen vanum by Welles (1962); it was considered a nomen dubium by Persson (1963); it was recombined as Ischyrhiza chilensis by Suarez and Cappetta (2004).
