Taxonomy
Montastrea nipponica was named by Eguchi (1951). Its type locality is Haipe, Tanohata-mura, Moshi Sandstone, which is in an Aptian perireef or subreef sandstone in the Moshi Sandstone Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Columnocoenia nipponica by Baron-Szabo (2009).
