Latomeandra somaensis was named by Eguchi (1951). Its type locality is Koyamada, Soma area, which is in an Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian shallow subtidal grainstone/lime mudstone in the Nakanosawa Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Latiastrea somaensis by Löser et al. (2021).
