Torpedo was named by Houttuyn (1764) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Plagiostomi by Agassiz (1835); to Torpedinidae by Woodward (1889), Jaekel (1894), Jordan (1963) and Cappetta (1987); and to Torpedinoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
