Mobula was named by Rafinesque (1810) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Mobulidae by Jordan (1963), Cappetta (1987) and Purdy et al. (2001); and to Myliobatiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
