Centrastrea japonica was named by Eguchi (1951). Its type locality is Oshima Island, Kesennuma, which is in a Hauterivian shallow subtidal limestone in the Yokonuma Formation of Japan.
It was recombined as Thamnasteria japonica by Kiessling (2008).
