Protexanites was named by Matsumoto (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l K Sant-u].

It was assigned to Collignoniceratidae by Thomel (1988); to Texanitinae by Jones (1966), Kennedy (1984), Kennedy and Christensen (1991), Kennedy (1995) and Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
