Amphihelia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857).

It was synonymized subjectively with Madrepora by Wells (1956); it was reranked as Madrepora (Amphihelia) by Dieni and Omenetto (1960).

It was assigned to Madrepora by Dieni and Omenetto (1960); and to Oculinidae by Chevalier (1961).
