Cyphonochelus was named by Jousseaume (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Typhis (Cyphonochilus) by Dieni and Omenetto (1960); it was synonymized subjectively with Siphonochelus by Gertman (1969); it was reranked as Typhis (Ciphonochelus) by Mandic and Steininger (2003).

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Typhis by Dieni and Omenetto (1960) and Mandic and Steininger (2003).
