Ptychoceras was named by d'Orbigny (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u K Albi-u]. Its type is Ptychoceras emericanum.

It was reranked as Hemiptychoceras (Ptychoceras) by Kennedy (1994).

It was assigned to Hemiptychoceras by Kennedy (1994); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychoceratidae by Henderson (1990), Kakabadze and Hoedemaeker (1997), Landra et al. (2000) and Klein et al. (2007).
