Nerita peloronta was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Nerita, Nerita (Nerita).

It was recombined as Nerita (Nerita) peloronta by Woodring (1973) and Landau et al. (2016).
