Rhamphidoceras was named by Kennedy and Cobban (1990) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l]. Its type is Rhamphidoceras saxatilis.

It was assigned to Mammitidae by Kennedy and Cobban (1990); and to Mammitinae by Wright et al. (1996) and Wright (1996).
