Hypagnostus was named by Jaeckel (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Hypagnostidae.
It was assigned to Spinagnostidae by Whittington et al. (1997); to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002); to Peronopsidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Hypagnostidae by Paterson and Laurie (2004); and to Spinagnostinae by Jago and Cooper (2007).
