Schloenbachia was named by Neumayr (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Ceno-u]. Its type is Ammonites varians. It is the type genus of Schloenbachiidae.

It was reranked as Ammonites (Schloenbachia) by Fallot (1885).

It was assigned to Ammonites by Fallot (1885); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Schloenbachiidae by Kennedy et al. (1980), Kennedy (1994), Kennedy et al. (2008) and Gale et al. (2018).
