Tarsodactylus was named by Hitchcock (1858). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Anomoepus by Olsen (1986).

It was assigned to Dinosauria by Hitchcock (1898) and Lull (1904); to Reptilia by Lull (1917); to Amphibia by Kuhn (1958); and to Batrachopodidae by Haubold (1969).
