Sauroidichnites minitans was named by Hitchcock (1837). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Plectropus minitans by Hitchcock (1845) and Hitchcock (1848); it was recombined as Plectropterna minitans by Hitchcock (1871), Miller (1879), Hitchcock (1889), Lyman (1894), Hitchcock (1898) and Lull (1917).
