Batrachoides nidificans was named by Hitchcock (1858). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is the type species of Koilosoma.

It was recombined as Koilosoma nidificans by Hitchcock and Grier (1927); it was considered a nomen dubium by Shepard (1867); it was considered a nomen vanum by Hay (1902).
