Taxonomy
Sphenodus recurvus was named by Trautschold (1877).

It was recombined as Synechodus recurvus by Woodward (1889) and Herman (1975); it was recombined as Paraorthacodus recurvus by Cvancara and Hoganson (1993), Siverson (1997) and Rees (2000).
