Murex cellulosus was named by Conrad (1846). It is extant.

It was recombined as Ocinebra (Favartia) cellulosa by Dall (1889); it was recombined as Murex (Favartia) cellulosus by Olsson and Harbison (1954); it was recombined as Favartia cellulosa by Hendy et al. (2008).
