Taxonomy
Miopelodytes gilmorei was named by Taylor (1941). Its type specimen is U. S. N. M. No. 12356, a skeleton (entire skeleton), and it is a compression preserving soft parts. Its type locality is Miopelodytes type locality, which is in a Miocene lacustrine shale in the Elko Shales Formation of Nevada. It is the type species of Miopelodytes.
