Enhydriodon was named by Falconer (1868) [type Indian E. sivalensis]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lutrinae by Crusafont-Pairo and Golpe (1962), Hendey (1974) and Kurten and Anderson (1980); to Enhydrini by Willemsen (1992); to Carnivora by Sepkoski (2002); to Mustelidae by Falconer (1868), Carroll (1988) and Geraads et al. (2004); and to Enhydriodontini by Pickford (2007).
