Celtedens megacephalus
Taxonomy
Triton megacephalus was named by Costa (1864). Its type specimen is M 542, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Civita di Pietraroja (upper plattenkalk), which is in an Albian basinal (carbonate) mudstone/wackestone in Italy.
It was recombined as Albanerpeton megacephalus by Estes (1981), Barbera and Macuglia (1988), Barbera and Macuglia (1991) and Bravi (1994); it was recombined as Celtedens megacephalus by McGowan and Evans (1995), McGowan and Ensom (1997), Gardner (2000), McGowan (2002), Evans and McGowan (2002), Venczel and Gardner (2005) and Gardner and Böhme (2008).
It was recombined as Albanerpeton megacephalus by Estes (1981), Barbera and Macuglia (1988), Barbera and Macuglia (1991) and Bravi (1994); it was recombined as Celtedens megacephalus by McGowan and Evans (1995), McGowan and Ensom (1997), Gardner (2000), McGowan (2002), Evans and McGowan (2002), Venczel and Gardner (2005) and Gardner and Böhme (2008).
