Regalerpeton weichangensis

Taxonomy
Regalerpeton weichangensis was named by Zhang et al. (2009). Its type specimen is IVPP V14391A, B, a partial skeleton (incomplete skeleton with bony impressions preserved as part and counterpart), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Daobaziliang, which is in a Barremian/Aptian fluvial-lacustrine siltstone in the Huajiying Formation of China. It is the type species of Regalerpeton.

Zhang et al. 2009An Early Cretaceous salamander differing from other caudates in the following combination of character states: skull wide with round rostrum; alary process of premaxilla moderate in length; parietal with anteromedial extension, about half length of the frontal edge; prefrontal and lacrimal absent; vomerine tooth rows long and parallel to the maxillary arcade; pterygoid with slender, inwardly curved dentate anterior process and a medial process; prearticular/coronoid long, with two processes; angular absent; ossified quadrate present; external gills (including gill rakers) absent; one ossified pair of hypobranchials and two ossified pairs of ceratobranchials present; ribs unicapitate and expanded proximally; transverse process of presacrals half the length of the vertebra; scapulocoracoid greatly expanded proximally; and carpals and tarsals ossified.
