Stagonolepinae was named by Huene (1936).

It was corrected as Stagonolepininae by Heckert and Lucas (2000) and Heckert and Lucas (2002); it was misspelled as Stagonolepidinae by Parker (2016).

It was assigned to Stagonolepidae by Huene (1942), Kuhn (1946) and Kuhn (1966); to Stagonolepididae by Heckert and Lucas (2000) and Heckert and Lucas (2002); and to Desmatosuchia by Parker (2016).
