Taxonomy
Mactra solidissima was named by Dilwyn (1817) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Maine-Gulf of Mexico. TYPE: Holotype missing.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Spisula (Hemimactra) solidissima by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Spisula solidissima by Abbott (1954), Richards (1962), Castagna and Chanley (1973) and Spencer and Campbell (1987); it was recombined as Hemimactra solidissima by Hendy et al. (2008).
