Venus dione was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Hysteroconcha.
It was recombined as Pitar dione by Weisbord (1964); it was recombined as Hysteroconcha dione by Woodring (1982) and Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).
