Raja fallax was named by Arambourg (1952).

It was recombined as Dasyatis fallax by Herman (1977); it was recombined as Coupatezia fallax by Cappetta (1987), Noubhani and Cappetta (1997), Cappetta and Corral (1999) and Corral et al. (2016).
