Subastieria was named by Spath (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-l]. Its type is Olcostephanus sulcosus.

It was assigned to Olcostephaninae by Avram and Gradinaru (1993); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
