Taxonomy
Tarrantoceras was named by Stephenson (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-m K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 901]. Its type is Mantelliceras sellardsi.

It was assigned to Acanthoceratidae by Cobban (1988); to Acanthoceratinae by Cooper (1978), Kennedy et al. (1988), Kennedy and Cobban (1990) and Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).

Wright et al. 1996Small, compressed, and evolute; with ribs close to distant, rectiradiate, straight or slightly sinuous, branching from umbilical tubercles or long and short, and transverse across arched or flat venter; early whorls with umbilical bullae, inner and close outer ventrolateral tubercles, and slight siphonal tubercles. Suture with short, broad, and rather simple saddles, the second lateral commonly projecting beyond the rest.
