Sphenobaiera was named by Florin (1936). It is not extant. Its type is Sphenobaiera spectabilis.
It was assigned to Ginkgoaceae by Jain and Delevoryas (1967); to Karkeniaceae by Retallack (1981); to Peltaspermaceae by Meyen (1984); to Ginkgophyta by Andrews (1970) and Dobruskina (1995); and to Ginkgoales by Holmes (1982), Chandra and Tewari (1991) and Pedernera et al. (2019).
