Thambites was named by Arkell (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath-l]. Its type is Thambites planus.

It was assigned to Thamboceratidae by Arkell (1952) and Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
