Thamboceras was named by Douvillé (1916) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-u]. Its type is Thamboceras mirum. It is the type genus of Thamboceratidae.
It was assigned to Thamboceratidae by Arkell (1952) and Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
