Murex carica was named by Gmelin (1792) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Western Atlantic. TYPE: Holotype unknown.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Pyrula carica by Cooke (1936); it was recombined as Busycon (Busycon) carica by Olsson (1967); it was recombined as Busycon carica by Holmes (1858), Smith (1938), Abbott (1954), Richards (1962), Spencer and Campbell (1987) and Hendy et al. (2008).
