Mytilus aristatus was named by Dillwyn (1817). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lithophaga (Myoforceps) aristata by Mansfield (1937); it was recombined as Lithophaga aristata by Poppe and Goto (1993); it was recombined as Myoforceps aristata by Callapez and Ferreira Soares (2000).
