Arca (Barbatia) lignitifera was named by Aldrich (1908). Its type specimen is USNM 639054, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Arca lignitifera by Sheldon (1917); it was recombined as Barbatia lignitifera by Palmer and Brann (1965).
