Trachyscaphites was named by Cobban and Scott (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1107].

It was assigned to Scaphitidae by Atabekyan and Khakimov (1976); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scaphitinae by Cobban and Kennedy (1992), Kennedy (1993), Ifrim et al. (2015) and Niebuhr et al. (2016).
