Hemimastodon was named by Pilgrim (1912).

It was reranked as Tetrabelodon (Hemimastodon) by Osborn (1936).

It was assigned to Tetrabelodon by Osborn (1936); to Elephantiformes by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Hemimastodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Elephantiformes by Shoshani and Tassy (2005).
