Tropitoides was named by Spath (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l K Turo-u]. Its type is Ammonites obesus.

It was assigned to Forbesiceratinae by Wright (1952); to Haplocerataceae by Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).

Wright et al. 1996Involute, highwhorled, with slightly convex sides sloping towards rather narrow venter bearing prominent, slightly rounded keel; close, rather flat, falcoid ribs ending in feeble ventrolateral clavi. [Suture with second lateral saddle projecting beyond other elements and the minute umbilicus recall Aconeceratinae but other features and stratigraphical horizon render connection unlikely.]
