Baru was named by Willis et al. (1990). Its type is Baru darrowi.
It was assigned to Mekosuchinae by Willis et al. (1993); to Crocodylinae by Willis et al. (1990) and Willis (1993); to Mekosuchinae by Yates (2017) and Rio and Mannion (2021); and to Mekosuchini by Molnar et al. (2002), Ristevski et al. (2022) and Yates et al. (2023).
