Typhis dentatus was named by Johnson (1899). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Typhis (Typhina) dentatus by Keen (1944) and Harris and Palmer (1947); it was recombined as Typhis (Rugotyphis) dentatus by Gertman (1969).
