Murex (Typhis) cleryi was named by Petit de la Saussaye (1840). It is extant.

It was recombined as Murex cleryi by Tryon (1880); it was recombined as Typhis (Typhinellus) cleryi by Keen (1944); it was recombined as Typhis (Rugotyphis) cleryi by Gertman (1969).
