Siphonochelus was named by Jousseaume (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Typhinae by Gertman (1969), Vokes (1983), Perrilliat (1992) and Wilson (1994); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Todd (2001) and Landau et al. (2007).
