Pterotyphis was named by Jousseaume (1880). It is extant. Its type is Typhis pinnatus.

It was assigned to Typhinae by Gertman (1969); to Muricidae by Jousseaume (1880), Jousseaume (1881) and Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
