Typhis pinnatus was named by Broderip (1833) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Holotype not found.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Pterotyphis, Pterotyphis (Pterotyphis).

It was recombined as Pterotyphis (Pterotyphis) pinnatus by Gertman (1969).
