Taxonomy
Murex (Pteropurpura) weisbordi was named by Harris and Palmer (1947). Its type specimen is PRI 4657, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is PRI Moodys Branch marl locality 11, which is in a Bartonian marine marl in the Moodys Branch Formation of Mississippi.
It was recombined as Pterynotus weisbordi by Palmer and Brann (1960); it was recombined as Pterynotus (Pterynotus) weisbordi by Vokes (1970).
