Pteropurpura postii was named by Dall (1896). Its type specimen is USNM 130349, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Murex (Pteropurpura) posti by Dall (1903); it was recombined as Purpura (Pteropurpura) posti by Dall (1915); it was recombined as Pterynotus (Pterynotus) posti by Vokes (1970).
