Pterynotus (Pterynotus) hoerlei was named by Vokes (1970). Its type specimen is USNM 645616, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is TU 547 - Fourmile Creek, which is in a Burdigalian marine marl/sandstone in the Chipola Formation of Florida.
