Taxonomy
Murex (Pteronotus) phaneus was named by Dall (1889). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 93256, a shell.

It was recombined as Murex (Pterynotus) phaneus by Clench and Pérez Farfante (1945); it was recombined as Pterynotus (Pterynotus) phaneus by Vokes (1970).
